The 2016 Clockspring Proprietary Red is a notable blend of Tempranillo and Zinfandel. With this blend, we continue to pay homage to these varietals and their excellence in the Sierra Foothills growing region. The Tempranillo is the noble grape of Spain, having been grown on the Iberian peninsula since Phoenician times. Zinfandel is the heritage grape of California, the favored varietal to plant in the post-Mission period. While the style of Zinfandel varies widely depending on where it is grown, the fruit from Clockspring Vineyards gives us the juicy, brambly core to this wine. The Tempranillo grows at the other end of the Shenandoah Valley and provides a wild rusticity and lifted dried herb and floral component. Although these varietals are sometimes known to produce lighter red wines, the structure provided by the red, granitic soils of the Sierra Foothills is certainly present and complemented by the use of French Oak barrels. We hope you will join us in raising a glass to this unorthodox blend of two storied varietals.
